Also known as an up-down CNC bit or compression end mill, this cutter combines up-cut and down-cut geometry to help produce clean edges on both the top and bottom of your workpiece. Traditional spiral bits generally force material fibers in one direction.
An up-cut bit provides excellent chip evacuation but can pull fibers upward and leave tear-out along the top edge. A down-cut bit pushes fibers downward for a cleaner top surface but can leave the bottom edge rough.
A compression bit combines both cutting directions.
The lower portion of the cutting edge uses up-cut geometry while the upper portion uses down-cut geometry. When properly engaged in the material, the cutting forces are directed toward the center of the workpiece, helping leave cleaner top and bottom edges in the same cut.
