Also known as an up-down CNC bit or compression end mill, this cutter combines up-cut and down-cut geometry to help produce clean edges on both the top and bottom of your workpiece. That makes it an excellent choice for plywood, hardwood panels, and other materials where tear-out on either face can mean extra sanding—or a project that simply doesn't look as good as it should.

With the ability to cut through material up to 1.5" thick in a single pass when your CNC setup and material allow, this 1/2" compression bit is a serious workhorse for efficient CNC woodworking.

Why Use a Compression Bit?

Traditional spiral bits generally force material fibers in one direction.

An up-cut bit provides excellent chip evacuation but can pull fibers upward and leave tear-out along the top edge. A down-cut bit pushes fibers downward for a cleaner top surface but can leave the bottom edge rough.

A compression bit combines both cutting directions.

The lower portion of the cutting edge uses up-cut geometry while the upper portion uses down-cut geometry. When properly engaged in the material, the cutting forces are directed toward the center of the workpiece, helping leave cleaner top and bottom edges in the same cut.

That makes compression bits especially useful when both faces of your finished project matter.

1/2" Compression Bit

The IDC 1/2" Compression Bit has exceeded my expectations. I'm using it on a Onefinity Elite Foreman with a PwnCNC spindle to cut pressure-treated 2x lumber, and the cut quality is outstanding. The edges come out clean with virtually no tear-out. I highly recommend this bit to anyone looking for clean, professional results.
