COMPRESSION BITS

A compression bit is a spiral bit that leaves a clean edge on both the top and bottom of a cut at the same time. The lower part clears chips downward for a smooth bottom while the upper part presses the top fibers down, and the two actions meet in the middle to compress the material, so both faces come out clean in a single pass with no tear-out. Available in 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" shanks to fit any CNC machine.

¼” Compression Bit

¼” Compression Bit

The 1/4" compression bit is the size most people start with on a 1/4" machine and a good default for most projects. It leaves a clean top and bottom edge in one pass on plywood, melamine, and solid wood, which makes it a solid pick for cabinet parts, sign blanks, and any cutout where both faces show. The rigid 1/4" shank holds up to full-depth passes and higher feed rates.

⅛” Compression Bit

The 1/8" compression bit is made for owners of compact desktop machines and anyone focused on detail work. It fits smaller CNC routers that take a 1/8" collet and cuts crisp edges on small parts, inlays, and tight profiles where a 1/4" bit is too large. Both faces still come out clean, just at a scale that fits desktop machines.

2 pc Compression Endmill Bit Set

The 2-piece compression set pairs a 1/4" and a 1/8" bit so you can move between larger cutouts and fine detail without swapping suppliers. Buying the two together is a more efficient way to add to your collection, and it covers both common flute diameters for most plywood and laminate work.

WHY CHOOSE OUR COMPRESSION BITS

WHY CHOOSE OUR COMPRESSION BITS

Solid Carbide and Carbide-Tipped

All our V-bits are made in the USA, either from solid carbide or with a carbide blade brazed to a steel body on the wider cutting bits. Both hold a sharp edge far longer than cheap imports, so your V-carves stay crisp through more projects.

Built for Beginners

Bit angles are explained in plain terms, and free written guides and videos walk through each cut. That way there is no guesswork about which angle to run or how to set feeds and speeds before the first V-carve.

Clean on Both Faces

A compression spiral cuts in opposite directions at the same time, lifting chips from the bottom and pressing fibers down at the top. That cut action traps the material between the two flutes and leaves both faces free of tear-out, which is why compression bits are the standard choice for plywood, melamine, and composite materials.

When to Use a Compression Bit

A compression bit is the right pick any time the finished project shows a cut edge on both faces and sanding is not an option. It leaves a clean top and bottom edge in a single pass, so both sides come out smooth without the extra work. Common projects include:

  • Freestanding hardwood letters with a clean edge all the way around
  • Shelf brackets and corbels cut from thick hardwood
  • Standing name signs cut clean through, so the back looks as good as the front
  • Wooden toys and puzzles where each edge is handled and seen

Our Guarantee to You

Every IDC Woodcraft router bit is made in the USA from premium carbide. If a bit breaks within 90 days, send it back with the return form, and we replace it with the same model. If you are not satisfied with the clean-cut quality or the tool life you are getting, we want to hear from you.

ABOUT IDC WOODCRAFT

IDC Woodcraft is based in Madison, Indiana, and led by founder Garrett Fromme. We make solid carbide CNC router bits in the USA and sell them alongside CNC machines, spindles, vacuum tables, routing accessories, software, and project files, helping customers build a working CNC shop without sourcing equipment from multiple suppliers. We also publish an extensive library of free CNC training resources, including long-form YouTube tutorials, videos, written articles, and a chipload calculator. What our customers are saying about us

Not only are IDC Woodcraft bits the best available and reasonably priced, but the service and attention to detail are top notch. I have never had a better personal experience dealing with a vendor than I have with IDC Woodcraft. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

- David B

IDC Woodcraft is awesome. I've ordered bits from them several times now. The bits have arrived quickly and are of very high quality. I've had zero issues using their router bits. Will be buying more bits soon. Garrett, your videos are also very well done and super for helping beginners get started.

- Duane G

Best in the business! I started watching IDC videos on Youtube before i ever bought my first router. Its what gave me the confidence to do it. Knowing that any info i would need, to learn the craft, would be available in one place and would be easy to follow and understand.

- Brian M

Best CNC bits I ever had. IDC app is very helpful for feed and speeds. My CNC journey started smooth with the help of videos and I have learned a lot from Garrett through his videos. Highly recommend.

- Afran A

Garrett and IDC Woodcraft are top-notch. Not only do they provide some of the best, most useful CNC workflow, production, troubleshooting, and just plain fun videos on YouTube, they host live sessions and Garrett is always ready to respond to a request for help.

- Darin M

IDC's CNC training videos, resources, and bits are unparalleled! Garrett has a simple and succinct way of explaining advanced concepts to beginners and experts alike. IDC's customer service is excellent. Highly recommend!

- Chris F

Garrett is providing a great product. His bits perform exactly as advertised (even though it can take a few test runs for the timid to be convinced the parameters provided are correct). I've used several of his bits and I'm a big fan.

- Randall B

IDC Woodcraft is possibly the best company you can buy from because of all the added extras you receive at no extra cost. The bits remain extra sharp even through them unwanted cuts that hit screws etc. The videos that Garrett produces have really helped me along my short journey into CNC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a compression bit used for?

A compression bit is used to cut a clean top and bottom edge in one pass, which makes it the go-to spiral router bit for sheet goods like plywood, melamine, and laminate. It shines on cutouts and parts where both faces show in the finished piece, since neither side comes out with the fuzzy tear-out, a plain upcut, or downcut bit can leave.

What materials should I use a compression bit on?

Compression bits are built for sheet goods and composite materials, including plywood, melamine, MDF core laminate, and veneered panels, where surface quality on both sides matters. They also cut solid wood well. On very thin material or shallow engraving, the compression zone may not fully land inside the cut, so a downcut bit is often the simpler choice there.

What is the difference between a compression bit and an upcut or downcut bit?

An upcut bit clears chips upward and leaves a clean bottom but can fray the top edge. A downcut bit does the opposite, giving a clean top while packing chips into the cut. A compression bit blends both, so you get a clean edge on the top and bottom at the same time.

Do I need to cut in one pass or several?

For the compression action to work, the cut needs enough depth that both the upcut and downcut sections of the flute engage the material. On thicker stock you can often run a single full-depth pass, while deeper material may call for more than one pass at a slower feed. Our chipload calculator helps you set a stepdown and feed rate that keep the edge clean without overloading the bit.

Which shank size do I need?

Match the shank to the collet in your CNC machine. Compact and desktop routers usually take a 1/8" shank, most standard machines run 1/4", and large or industrial routers use 3/8" or 1/2". A larger shank is more rigid and better for deep, full-depth cuts, but it only helps if your machine has the rigidity and power to drive it.
