UPCUT BITS

An upcut router bit is a spiral bit that pulls chips up and out of the cut as it spins. That fast chip clearance keeps the bit cool and clears material quickly, which makes it a workhorse for pockets, deep cuts, and roughing. Our upcut bits are made in the USA from solid carbide, in shank sizes to fit compact, desktop, and full-size CNC routers.

High-Performance 1/4" Up Cut Endmill

High-Performance 1/4" Up Cut Endmill

The 1/4" up cut endmill is best suited for anyone on a 1/4" machine who wants a workhorse bit for clearing material fast. It hogs out the bulk of a pocket or cutout while pulling chips up and out of the cut, so you can push the feed rate and cut down your run time. Most shops keep one in the rack as a first go-to bit, since it saves the finer down cutters for detail work.

1/8" Up-Cut Endmill Bit, Set of 2

1/8" Up-Cut Endmill Bit, Set of 2

The 1/8" up-cut endmill is best suited for compact desktop machines that take a 1/8" collet and for smaller pockets and cutouts. It clears chips out of tight, deep cuts where a downcut bit would pack them in, and it comes as a set of two so a spare is always on hand. This one is also drilling capable, so it can plunge straight down as well as cut sideways.

1/2" Up Cut Endmill

1/2" Up Cut Endmill

The 1/2" up cut endmill is best suited for large and industrial machines with the power to drive a 1/2" shank. Its bigger cutting diameter removes a lot of material in a single pass, which makes short work of deep pockets and heavy roughing on solid wood and plywood. The thick shank stays rigid through aggressive cuts where a smaller bit would flex or fail.

WHY CHOOSE OUR UPCUT ROUTER BITS

WHY CHOOSE OUR UPCUT ROUTER BITS

BUILT FOR BEGINNERS

Shank sizes are matched to your machine and written guides walk you through each project. You are not left guessing at cut types or settings before your first carve.

FAST CHIP EVACUATION

The upcut spiral lifts chips up and out instead of packing them in, so the bit runs cooler and cuts cleaner in deep pockets and slots.

CLEAN BOTTOM EDGE

The upward cut leaves a smooth, clean edge on the bottom face, so parts come off the machine ready to use where the underside shows.

When to Use an Upcut Bit

An upcut bit is the right pick when you need to clear material fast or cut deep without chips packing in, and the bottom surface is the side that shows. It pulls chips up and out, so it cuts cool and clean at the bottom even in deep pockets. Common projects include:

  • Roughing out 3D carves and relief signs before the finishing pass
  • Deep mortises, dados, and slots cut in hardwood
  • Inlay pockets and tray recesses where chips need to clear
  • Fast cutouts on large parts and production runs

Our Guarantee to You

We build every upcut bit in the USA from premium carbide and back it for a full 90 days. Break one inside that window, return it with the form, and we send the same model back at no charge. If it is not holding up the way a quality router bit should, tell us, because we would rather make it right.

ABOUT IDC WOODCRAFT

IDC Woodcraft is based in Madison, Indiana, and led by founder Garrett Fromme. We make solid carbide CNC router bits in the USA and sell them alongside CNC machines, spindles, vacuum tables, routing accessories, software, and project files, helping customers build a working CNC shop without sourcing equipment from multiple suppliers. We also publish an extensive library of free CNC training resources, including long-form YouTube tutorials, videos, written articles, and a chipload calculator. Beginners get straightforward guidance, while experienced CNC workers get dependable bits for longer production runs.

What our customers are saying about us

IDC Woodcraft is possibly the best company you can buy from because of all the added extras you receive at no extra cost. The bits remain extra sharp even through them unwanted cuts that hit screws etc. The videos that Garrett produces have really helped me along my short journey into CNC.

- Paul G

Garrett is providing a great product. His bits perform exactly as advertised (even though it can take a few test runs for the timid to be convinced the parameters provided are correct). I've used several of his bits and I'm a big fan.

- Randall B

IDC's CNC training videos, resources, and bits are unparalleled! Garrett has a simple and succinct way of explaining advanced concepts to beginners and experts alike. IDC's customer service is excellent. Highly recommend!

- Chris F

Garrett and IDC Woodcraft are top-notch. Not only do they provide some of the best, most useful CNC workflow, production, troubleshooting, and just plain fun videos on YouTube, they host live sessions and Garrett is always ready to respond to a request for help.

- Darin M

Best CNC bits I ever had. IDC app is very helpful for feed and speeds. My CNC journey started smooth with the help of videos and I have learned a lot from Garrett through his videos. Highly recommend.

- Afran A

Best in the business! I started watching IDC videos on Youtube before i ever bought my first router. Its what gave me the confidence to do it. Knowing that any info i would need, to learn the craft, would be available in one place and would be easy to follow and understand.

- Brian M

IDC Woodcraft is awesome. I've ordered bits from them several times now. The bits have arrived quickly and are of very high quality. I've had zero issues using their router bits. Will be buying more bits soon. Garrett, your videos are also very well done and super for helping beginners get started.

- Duane G

Not only are IDC Woodcraft bits the best available and reasonably priced, but the service and attention to detail are top notch. I have never had a better personal experience dealing with a vendor than I have with IDC Woodcraft. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an upcut router bit used for?

An upcut router bit is used to clear material fast and keep chips out of the cut, which makes it the best choice for pockets, deep slots, mortises, and roughing out a shape. The spiral pulls chips up and out, so the bit cuts cool and leaves a clean bottom edge, which is why it is a common first bit for heavy removal before detail work.

What is the difference between an upcut and a downcut bit?

They are both straight bits that cut a straight wall. The difference is which way the spiral moves the leftover chips. An upcut bit lifts chips up and out of the cut, which clears deep pockets and keeps the bit cool, but it can raise the wood fibers at the top edge and leave a little fuzz. A downcut bit does the reverse, pressing chips down for a clean top surface while packing them into the bottom of the cut. Our guide on upcut vs downcut bits breaks down when to reach for each.

When should I use an upcut bit instead of a compression bit?

An upcut bit clears chips and cuts fast but leaves the top edge a little rough, while a compression bit combines an upcut and downcut spiral to keep both the top and bottom edge clean at once. For roughing, deep pockets, and any part where only the bottom face shows, an upcut is the faster, lower-cost choice. Reach for a compression bit when both faces of the finished piece need to be clean.

Can I use an upcut bit in a handheld or laminate trimmer?

Yes. An upcut spiral bit runs in a handheld router or a laminate trimmer as well as a CNC, and its chip clearance makes it useful for plunge cuts, mortises, and deep grooves by hand. Match the shank to the router's collet and take steady passes, and use our feeds and speeds guide to help you set a pace that keeps the bit clearing chips and running cool.

Which shank size do I need?

Match the shank to the collet in your CNC machine. Compact and desktop machines usually take a 1/8" shank, most standard machines run 1/4", and large or industrial machines use 1/2". A larger bit removes material faster and stays rigid in heavy cuts, while a smaller bit fits tighter work, and our free chipload calculator and tool files help you dial in each one for your machine.
