Downcut Router Bits

A downcut router bit is a spiral bit that leaves a clean top edge on the surface of the material. Its spiral presses the wood fibers down as it cuts. That downward pressure holds the top surface tight and stops the fraying and fuzz along cut edges, which makes a downcut bit the choice for pockets, letters, and any project where the top face is the show side. It is a common choice for plywood, veneered panels, and any project where the top surface shows.

What is the difference between a downcut and an upcut bit?

The two spiral in opposite directions. An upcut bit lifts chips up and out of the cut, which clears deep pockets well but can fray the top edge. A downcut bit presses chips and fibers down, which leaves a clean top surface but packs chips into the bottom of the cut. Many CNC users keep both an upcut and downcut bit on hand and match the bit to the job.

When should I use a downcut bit instead of a compression bit?

A downcut bit keeps the top edge clean, while a compression bit combines an upcut spiral at the tip and a downcut section above it to keep both the top and bottom edges clean at once. For shallow cuts, surface work, and single-sided parts, a downcut bit does the job at a lower cost. A compression bit earns its place on thicker parts where both faces show.

Do downcut bits clear chips well?

Chip removal is the trade-off with a downcut bit. Because the spiral pushes chips down instead of up, they can pack into the bottom of a deep cut, so downcut bits work best on shallow grooves and clean surface work. On deeper cuts, taking lighter passes and letting the chipload-calculator set the feed rate keeps the bit cool and the cut clean.

Can I use a downcut bit in a handheld or trim router?

Yes. A downcut spiral bit runs in a handheld or trim router as well as a CNC, and the clean top edge is useful for hinge mortises, dados, and edge work by hand. Match the shank to the router's collet, and keep the passes shallow so chips clear and the cut stays smooth.
