CNC V-Grooving Bits

A V-groove bit is the tool that cuts the crisp, angled lines behind carved lettering, decorative grooves, and chamfered edges. The bit comes to a point at a set angle, so it carves a V-shaped groove that gets wider as it cuts deeper, which is what gives V-carved signs and letters their sharp, clean look. The angle of the bit controls the shape of that groove, from a narrow 30-degree line for fine detail to a wide 150-degree cut for large lettering and taper work.

Ultra-Clean Cuts, 30, 60, and 90 Degree V-Bit Set

Ultra-Clean Cuts, 30, 60, and 90 Degree V-Bit Set

The 30, 60, and 90-degree blade set is best suited for CNC users on a 1/4" machine who want the three most common V-carving angles in one purchase. Each bit is ground with a knife edge all the way to the point, so it shears the wood cleanly instead of scraping it, which leaves clean cuts down to fine 0.005" detail. The 30-degree handles fine lettering, the 60-degree suits inlays and detail, and the 90-degree covers most everyday V-carving.

⅛ Shank Deluxe V-Bit Grooving Set 30, 60 & 90 Degrees

⅛ Shank Deluxe V-Bit Grooving Set 30, 60 & 90 Degrees

The 1/8" Deluxe grooving set is made for owners of compact desktop machines that take a 1/8" collet. It packs the same three core angles into a smaller shank, with the 30-degree for fine engraving, the 60-degree for inlays and finer detail, and the 90-degree for general V-carving. This is a common first V-bit set for hobby routers working on ornaments, signs, and engraved gifts.

120-Degree Wide-Cutting V-Bit

120-Degree Wide-Cutting V-Bit

The 120-degree bit is best suited for makers cutting wide, shallow V-grooves and large lettering on a 1/4" machine. Its wide angle clears a broad cut in fewer passes, which suits oversized letters and signs meant to be read from a distance, and it cuts a clean chamfer along an edge. The bit body runs a little shorter than most, which keeps it stiff through the cut and holds a smooth, precise finish with less chatter.

WHY CHOOSE OUR V-GROOVE BITS

A set of metallic rotary burr drill bits arranged on a plain white background, including several larger angled bits, three smaller straight bits, and one larger circular bit piece.

Solid Carbide and Carbide-Tipped

All our V-bits are made in the USA, either from solid carbide or with a carbide blade brazed to a steel body on the wider cutting bits. Both hold a sharp edge far longer than cheap imports, so your V-carves stay crisp through more projects.

Less Chatter, Cleaner Finish

The wider grooving bits use a shorter, heavier body that stays stiff through the cut. Less flex means less chatter, which shows up as a smoother surface finish.

Built for Beginners

Bit angles are explained in plain terms, and free written guides and videos walk through each cut. That way there is no guesswork about which angle to run or how to set feeds and speeds before the first V-carve.

When to Use a V-Groove Bit

A V-groove bit is the right pick any time you want to carve a clean, sharp line into wood, like the letters on a sign, a decorative groove, or an angled edge. The bit comes to a point, so it cuts a V-shape that gets wider the deeper it goes, and the pointed shape is what gives it a crisp finished look. Common projects include:

  • Wood signs and quote boards with clean, sharp lettering
  • Angled, finished edges on picture frames, trays, and box lids
  • Decorate grooves along projects
  • Words or letters carved into a plaque

Our Guarantee to You

We stand behind every V-bit we sell. Each one is a high quality bit made in the USA from premium carbide, and if a bit breaks within 90 days, send it back with the return form, and we ship the same model in return. If the cut quality or the tool life is not what you expected, we would rather hear about it.

What our customers are saying about us

Best in the business! I started watching IDC videos on Youtube before i ever bought my first router. Its what gave me the confidence to do it. Knowing that any info i would need, to learn the craft, would be available in one place and would be easy to follow and understand.

- Brian M

IDC Woodcraft is awesome. I've ordered bits from them several times now. The bits have arrived quickly and are of very high quality. I've had zero issues using their router bits. Will be buying more bits soon. Garrett, your videos are also very well done and super for helping beginners get started.

- Duane G

Not only are IDC Woodcraft bits the best available and reasonably priced, but the service and attention to detail are top notch. I have never had a better personal experience dealing with a vendor than I have with IDC Woodcraft. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

- David B

Best CNC bits I ever had. IDC app is very helpful for feed and speeds. My CNC journey started smooth with the help of videos and I have learned a lot from Garrett through his videos. Highly recommend.

- Afran A

Garrett and IDC Woodcraft are top-notch. Not only do they provide some of the best, most useful CNC workflow, production, troubleshooting, and just plain fun videos on YouTube, they host live sessions and Garrett is always ready to respond to a request for help.

- Darin M

IDC's CNC training videos, resources, and bits are unparalleled! Garrett has a simple and succinct way of explaining advanced concepts to beginners and experts alike. IDC's customer service is excellent. Highly recommend!

- Chris F

Garrett is providing a great product. His bits perform exactly as advertised (even though it can take a few test runs for the timid to be convinced the parameters provided are correct). I've used several of his bits and I'm a big fan.

- Randall B

IDC Woodcraft is possibly the best company you can buy from because of all the added extras you receive at no extra cost. The bits remain extra sharp even through them unwanted cuts that hit screws etc. The videos that Garrett produces have really helped me along my short journey into CNC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a V-groove bit used for?

A V-groove bit cuts a V-shaped groove into the surface of the material, which makes it the bit behind V-carved lettering, decorative grooves, chamfered edges, and light joinery. It is one of the most used bits for sign making and any project where crisp, angled cuts carry the design.

What do different V-bit angles mean?

The angle is measured across the tip of the bit, and it decides the width and depth of the groove it cuts. A narrow angle like 30 degrees carves a tight, fine line for small lettering and detail, while wider angles like 90 or 120-degree open up broad, shallow cuts for large letters and chamfers. For most V-carved lettering at a normal size, a 60 or 90-degree bit gives a clean, readable cut, and signmakers add narrower or wider angles as projects call for them.

What is the difference between a V-groove bit and an engraving bit

The two overlap, since a narrow V-bit is often used for engraving. In general, engraving bits are the narrow-angle V-bits built for fine, shallow detail, while wider V-groove bits handle larger lettering, chamfers, and grooves. Angle and point size set them apart more than the name does.

Can a V-but cut a chamfer or edge treatment?

Yes. Running a V-bit along an edge cuts a clean chamfer, which is a common edge treatment on drawer fronts, sign borders, and panel edges. A 90-degree bit gives a 45-degree chamfer on each face, and other angles change the slope of the cut.

What materials can a V-groove bit cut?

V-groove bits work in solid wood, wood composite materials, and many hard plastics. Softer woods carve cleanly at higher feed rates, while harder woods and plastics call for a slower feed so the edge stays crisp. A sharp solid carbide or carbide-tipped bit and the right feeds and speeds do most of the work for you.
