SLOTTING BITS

A slot cutting router bit carves a narrow channel or groove into wood, and a keyhole T-slot bit cuts the exact slot a project needs to hang flush and secure on a wall. It cuts down and then sideways to form a keyhole shape, so a screw head slides in and locks the piece tight against the wall. It runs on a 1/4" shank that fits most CNC routers, so one simple toolpath gives you a clean, professional keyhole every time.

3/8 Keyhole T-Slot Router Bit for CNC Routers, 1/4 Shank

$36.67 USD

3/8" Keyhole T-Slot Router Bit

3/8" Keyhole T-Slot Router Bit

This keyhole T-slot bit is best suited for anyone hanging finished wood pieces flush against a wall, from light plaques to heavy shelving and shadow boxes in solid wood or thick plywood. It cuts a 3/8" keyhole with a narrow 1/4" entry slot, a smaller diameter than the keyhole itself, and its flutes cut down and sideways in one pass for a clean, nearly sanding-free slot. A keyhole slot holds far stronger than wire or a serrated hanger, and it lets the finished project rest flush and level on the wall.

WHY CHOOSE OUR SLOTTING BITS

WHY CHOOSE OUR SLOTTING BITS

STRONG, FLUSH HANGING

A keyhole slot locks onto a screw head and holds far stronger than wire or serrated hangers, so even heavy pieces sit flush and secure.

SANDING-FREE SLOT

The flutes cut down and sideways in one clean pass, so the slot comes out smooth with little to no sanding.

BUILT FOR BEGINNERS

Shank sizes are matched to your machine and written guides walk you through each project. You are not left guessing at cut types or settings before your first carve.

When to Use a Slot Cutter Router Bit

A keyhole slot bit is the right pick any time a wood project needs to hang flat and secure on a wall without visible hardware. It cuts the hidden slot on the back of the piece, so the front stays clean and the project sits flush. Common projects include:

  • Wall signs, flags, and murals that hang flush and level
  • Plaques and awards with a clean, hardware-free front
  • Picture frames with a hidden slot on the back
  • Drawer bottoms and back panels that need a hidden slot to seat into

What our customers are saying about us

IDC Woodcraft is possibly the best company you can buy from because of all the added extras you receive at no extra cost. The bits remain extra sharp even through them unwanted cuts that hit screws etc. The videos that Garrett produces have really helped me along my short journey into CNC.

- Paul G

Not only are IDC Woodcraft bits the best available and reasonably priced, but the service and attention to detail are top notch. I have never had a better personal experience dealing with a vendor than I have with IDC Woodcraft. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

- David B

IDC Woodcraft is awesome. I've ordered bits from them several times now. The bits have arrived quickly and are of very high quality. I've had zero issues using their router bits. Will be buying more bits soon. Garrett, your videos are also very well done and super for helping beginners get started.

- Duane G

Best in the business! I started watching IDC videos on Youtube before i ever bought my first router. Its what gave me the confidence to do it. Knowing that any info i would need, to learn the craft, would be available in one place and would be easy to follow and understand.

- Brian M

Best CNC bits I ever had. IDC app is very helpful for feed and speeds. My CNC journey started smooth with the help of videos and I have learned a lot from Garrett through his videos. Highly recommend.

- Afran A

Garrett and IDC Woodcraft are top-notch. Not only do they provide some of the best, most useful CNC workflow, production, troubleshooting, and just plain fun videos on YouTube, they host live sessions and Garrett is always ready to respond to a request for help.

- Darin M

IDC's CNC training videos, resources, and bits are unparalleled! Garrett has a simple and succinct way of explaining advanced concepts to beginners and experts alike. IDC's customer service is excellent. Highly recommend!

- Chris F

Garrett is providing a great product. His bits perform exactly as advertised (even though it can take a few test runs for the timid to be convinced the parameters provided are correct). I've used several of his bits and I'm a big fan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a keyhole T-slot router bit used for?

A keyhole T-slot router bit cuts the hidden slot that lets a finished wood project hang flush and secure on a wall. The bit plunges in and cuts sideways to form a keyhole shape, so a screw head slides in and locks the piece in place, which is why a dedicated keyhole router bit is the go-to for signs, plaques, and shelving.

How does a keyhole slot work?

A keyhole slot has a wider round opening that narrows into a slot, like the shape of an old keyhole. You drive a screw into the wall, hang the project so the screw head drops through the wide opening, then slide it down so the narrow slot grips under the head. The project ends up flush to the wall with no visible hardware.

Can I use this bit in a manual router or a CNC?

Both. This keyhole bit is designed for CNC routers, where one simple toolpath cuts the slot, and it also works in a manual router or router table for cutting keyhole slots by hand. Match the 1/4" shank diameter to your router's collet, and set the depth so the keyhole is deep enough for your screw head.

What size screw works with this keyhole bit?

The 3/8" keyhole opening fits most standard wall and drywall screw heads, and the narrow 1/4" slot width holds the shank of the screw once you slide the piece down. For heavy projects, drive the screw into a stud or a solid anchor so the keyhole slot has something strong to grip.

How do I get a clean keyhole slot?

A clean slot comes down to a steady feed rate and the right depth. Run the bit at the speed listed for it so it cuts down and sideways cleanly without burning, and keep the workpiece clamped flat so there is less vibration and the slot stays even. If you are not sure where to start, our feeds and speeds guide and free chipload calculator take the guesswork out of dialing in the right settings.
